The Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS), a not-for-profit mutual defence organisation safeguarding the careers and wellbeing of more than 70,000 UK medical and dental professionals, has been named a finalist in The Purpose Beyond Profit Award at the 2026 Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards.
For MDDUS, the shortlisting recognises a mission it has pursued for more than 120 years: to support and protect healthcare professionals throughout their career. Founded in 1902 and registered in Glasgow, according to its website, the mutual provides a safety net for clinicians facing complaints, investigations and negligence claims.
A safety net for professionals under strain
The pressures on the sector are stark. MDDUS reports that almost 15,000 members contacted it for advice in 2025, and it cites research indicating that 19% of health professionals had considered self-harm or suicide in the previous year, a finding it handles through what it describes as a life-changing service built around four customer promises.
Central to that service is a large in-house legal and advisory team, which the organisation says comprises 45 lawyers and more than 35 specialist advisers, including doctors and dentists, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The aim, according to MDDUS, is to connect members instantly with an empathetic expert who can act swiftly and deliver peace of mind.
Influence beyond casework
MDDUS states it was the first organisation to sign the 2025 Medical Defence Organisations Voluntary Code of Practice, becoming a signatory on 6 January 2025 according to its own corporate governance pages. It also points to legal precedents it has secured, contributions to national debates such as assisted dying legislation, and work to mitigate emerging risks, most recently bespoke AI training for ethical practice.
The organisation says its internal culture mirrors that outward commitment, reporting industry-high employee engagement and staff development that includes Samaritans training, so that compassion is embedded at every level.
The road to Grosvenor House
Those themes sit at the heart of its entry for The Purpose Beyond Profit Award, one of the categories at the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards. MDDUS says it supports members from the start of their career to retirement through proactive education, preventative resources and lobbying for robust protective laws, alongside a line of communication it believes might just save a life.
One doctor, quoted in the entry, put it simply: “Just to Say thank you for 44 yrs service. I have felt very well supported and well advised over the 4 decades.” Whether that career-long promise carries MDDUS to the trophy will be decided when the winners are unveiled at Grosvenor House this November.
