AI has had its big, noisy entrance. It has worn the shiny jacket, grabbed the conference microphone and promised to change absolutely everything before lunch.
Now comes the more interesting bit.
In 2026, businesses will not be judged on whether they use AI. They will be judged on whether AI is actually making them better.
That is a much tougher test. It is also a far more useful one.
For the past few years, artificial intelligence has been treated a little like a magic kettle: plug it in, ask nicely, and expect it to pour out productivity, growth and a few dazzling customer experiences. But anyone running a real organisation knows business rarely works like that. There are legacy systems. Nervous customers. Busy teams. Data that lives in six places, five of which nobody fully trusts.

AI is now there.
Generative AI has written emails, summarised meetings and produced images of dogs in business suits. Then came “vibe coding”, where people build software from plain-language prompts. AI agents are exciting, but they are not office pets
There is a tempting way to talk about AI agents as if they are charming little digital interns. “This one books meetings. This one checks invoices. This one builds reports. This one quietly tidies the CRM while everyone else is asleep.” Lovely.

The other audience that matters is inside the business.
Many employees are already using AI in small ways, whether officially or unofficially. They are summarising documents, drafting first versions, checking ideas, building spreadsheets, preparing presentations and trying to remove some of the sludge from their day.
That is good. But it also creates a management challenge.
If AI use grows in little pockets, without guidance, companies risk inconsistency, data leakage, poor-quality output and a new kind of workplace theatre: people looking busy by producing more documents nobody needed in the first place.
The internet has already given us a useful phrase for this: AI workslop. It means the low-quality, AI-generated output that looks polished at first glance but creates more work for everyone else. Every organisation experimenting with AI should have that phrase pinned somewhere visible.
The antidote is not to ban AI. It is to be clearer about good use.
Businesses need training, policies, shared examples and honest conversations about where AI helps and where human judgement still carries the weight. By 2026, “we use AI” will be about as impressive as “we use email”. The real question will be: what changed?
Award-worthy businesses should be ready to show evidence that links AI to meaningful improvement. That might include faster customer response times, higher satisfaction, fewer operational errors, stronger employee confidence, improved conversion or retention, lower service friction, better forecasting, clearer decision-making or new revenue opportunities.
Not every business will have all of these. Nor should they. The point is to choose the measures that match the problem being solved.
The right metric depends on the use case. Customer service tools should be judged on customer outcomes. Operational AI needs to prove accuracy, speed and resilience. Marketing applications should be tested against relevance, trust and commercial impact. Employee-facing tools need adoption, confidence and quality measures — not just output volume.
More stuff is not automatically better stuff. Most organisations already have enough of it.
