Five Rivers, a social enterprise working in England’s children’s social care sector, has been named a finalist in The Purpose Beyond Profit Award at the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards 2026.
Founded in 1989 with the aim of making real, lasting change in children’s lives, the organisation provides fostering, residential care and education services to around 1,300 children, many of whom have experienced abuse, neglect, trauma or family breakdown.
The shortlisting, announced in July 2026, recognises a business model built explicitly on purpose. As a social enterprise, Five Rivers reinvests a minimum of 51 per cent of its surplus back into services that directly benefit children and the people who care for them, according to the business. That reinvestment, it reports, allows it to go beyond statutory requirements by funding enhanced clinical provision, specialist training and additional support designed to improve outcomes for children.
Therapeutic support woven into daily care
Working in partnership with more than 100 local authorities, Five Rivers delivers integrated specialist support across fostering, residential, education and clinical services. At the centre of this model sits an embedded clinical approach known as attachment and trauma-informed care, or ATIC®, which underpins every aspect of the organisation’s work.
According to the business, this clinically informed practice means children are supported emotionally and therapeutically as well as practically. Carers, practitioners and educators are equipped to understand behaviour through a trauma lens, build trusting relationships and create the conditions for healing and growth as part of everyday practice, rather than as an optional extra.
Evidence that shapes the wider sector
Five Rivers describes itself as a research-led organisation. Its in-house clinical team generates evidence through practice, and its investment in clinical research and development includes work published in peer-reviewed journals, sharing learning that the organisation says continues to influence best practice across children’s social care.
The business also points to Investors in People Platinum accreditation, recognising excellence in leadership and people practices, and to all of its provision being rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted. Alongside these accolades, it highlights the ongoing outcomes achieved by the children it supports. The organisation’s website carries the strapline of turning children’s lives around, and states that it has been helping children rediscover their childhoods since 1989 from its base in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
A shortlist decided in November
Five Rivers now joins the other finalists in The Purpose Beyond Profit Award, a category that celebrates organisations demonstrating that social conscience and commercial success can go hand in hand. Winners across the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards programme will be revealed at a ceremony at Grosvenor House on Park Lane, London, on 10 November 2026.
For an organisation whose founding purpose still shapes its daily work nearly four decades on, the nomination places its commitment to purpose over profit on a national stage.
